Our Learn to Serge class is for beginners. 9:00 - 5:00 pm (7 hours) Bring a lunch!
In the morning, you will learn the basics of your serger - the most useful things it can do and how to thread it. In the afternoon, you will learn how to draft a pattern for an 8-panel bell skirt, and sew it together.
This is an novice level course. STUDENTS NEED TO BRING THEIR OWN MACHINE WITH MANUAL.
Course content covered:
- Cutting techniques for stretch fabric
- Assembly techniques using a seger or overlock machine
- Along the way, you'll get tips and tricks of the trade, short cuts, and become familiar with threading a serger.
Fabric, thread, and elastic are available to purchase on site or you can bring your own stretch fabric to work with.
To determine how much fabric you need, measure your hip, and double it, divide by 8, then add that to the doubled number. You can purchase your fabric at our store, or you can pick up fabric elsewhere. We generally make these skirts out of a fabric with some stretch.
For example, lets say the seat measurement is 40. Doubled is 80" - divided by 8 = 10". 80 + 10 = 90"
90" = 2.3m This will give you enough fabric to make your skirt, with a little play.
